The port is situated in Gulf of Mannar and is covered with Sri Lanka on the South East area and large part of India on the Western side. The port is in working conditions throughout the year. Earlier the port was not considered as one of the major port but later with the passage of time, the port was declared one of the major ports of India.
There are some benefits for the exporters as it is the only port in Southern part of India which provides facility to send the container every week directly to USA, Europe and China and few more. The major functioning area of the port is of handling bulk cargo and high speed-containers.
The aspiration of the port officials is to enhance the customer service, initializing high-quality services related to Information Technology. Attracting investment from the private sector is also on the top list for the betterment of the port. The port is well connected by railways and roadways. One more major aspect of the port operations running smoothly is that the night navigations are also very much effective. The storage facilities on the port are also remarkable, sufficient open area is available for assembling bulk cargoes approximately 30 000tonnes cargoes can be assembled for import and export. Fire safety systems are also installed on the port. In coming time there are some up gradations to be done on the port, as a new Coal berth will be constructed, along with a ship building yard. The changes and the up gradations are to be done soon to help the officials of the port in a better manner.
