Carbon steel, also referred to as plain carbon steel, is steel where the main alloying element is carbon. In fact steel with low carbon content has properties like iron.
Low-carbon steels include: AISI 1005-1026, 1108-1119, 1211-1215, and 1513-1527. Has less carbon as opposed to other steels and are innately easier to cold-form due to their flexible and ductile nature.

Low-carbon steels that are typically carburized include: AISI 1015, 1018, 1020, and 1117.
Medium-carbon steels include: AISI 1029-1053, 1137-1151, and 1541-1552. It can be heat treated so as to have a good balance and ductility. These steels are primarily used in forgings, large parts, and machined components.
Bolts, crankshafts, rods, and tubing’s in the automotive business are normally made of AISI 1040 and its alterations.
High-carbon steels include: AISI 1055-1095, 1137-1151, and 1561-1572 are very strong yet fragile. They respond better to heat treatment and have longer service life than medium-carbon steels.
High-carbon steels is said to have high wear resistance due to their better surface hardness.
