Handicraft exports showing a marginal rise

Increased Handicraft exports in December 2009 have boosted the morale of SMEs in India who are now confident that in the upcoming days there’ll be steady production and export growth.

Though the growth recorded was marginal, the increase in volumes has sent positive signals among the SME units in the sector. In December 2009, export volumes stood at Rs 1,124.16 crore as opposed to Rs. 1,098.58 crore recorded in December 2008, which signifies a spurt in orders received by SME handicraft exporters.

The start of a turnaround

Growing handicraft exports in December 2009 suggests the economy is on the revival mode. According to the Export Promotion Council of Handicrafts (EPCH), the small rise in exports is largely due to the stimulus measures undertaken by the Indian Government in the recent past.

According to industry sources, a slew of export promotional measures and sops launched by the government over the last few years have aided small-scale handicraft industries sail over the economic crises. In addition, the rise in global demand has also been helpful in reviving the falling export volumes.

In an endeavor to offer fresh impetus to the handicraft export growth, the government has drawn some mega plans like developing of mega clusters in Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) and Narasapur (Andhra Pradesh) that will do a world of good to the local artisans and SMEs in these regions.

The setting up of mega clusters will help small handicraft units to take advantage of world-class infrastructure and enhanced production facilities.

SMEs in the handicraft domain can now look forward to a stable growth in the output, as things look positive in the future.
