Azotobacter, a free –living nitrogen fixing bacterium has been used as a bio – fertilizer for several non-leguminous crops including vegetables. The bacterium is known to produce growth-promoting substances like IAA, GA, cytokinistand and vitamins, which have beneficial effects on crop growth. Some of the Azotobacter species confer an additional advantage since they are known to produce antibiotic, which suppress a variety of root pathogens. Better effects are obtained in soils having adequate organic matter.
Though the nitrogen contribution to the crop by Azotobacter is only 10-20 kg/ha, the production of growth promoting substance compensates its nitrogen deficiency by promoting seeding vigor and prolonged photosynthetic activity. Field trials conducted to study influence of Azotobacter inoculation at Dharwad and Bijapur research farms of the university of Agricultural sciences, Dharwad, karnataka, India have indicated increase yields in the range of 15-38% in sorghum, 3-8% in wheat and 25-28% in safflower.
