Chloramphenicols (MEKMYCETIN-500) is a bacteriostatic antimicrobial drug made from the bacterium Streptomyces venezuelae which was introduced into clinical practice in 1949. It was the first antibiotic which was manufactured synthetically on large scale. It is effective against a wide variety of microorganisms, it has got an extensive use in eye drops or ointments for bacterial conjunctivitis.
