ASTERISK ELECTRONICS PVT. LTD., was formed in 1995 to extend the use of the basic toner powder for laser printer cartridge refilling industry. Earlier re-fillers in market were using photocopier toner to fill the laser printer cartridges. First time in the country, engine wise laser toner by the brand AEPL was introduced by the company. Later ASTERISK was the first in the whole world to develop and promote universal toner concept by the name “SUPER DELUX”. When this concept was not even there in the USA.
Prior to that In 1989, ASTERISK COMPUTERS, was started to cater to the requirements of PC based phototypesetting terminals used by the English and Indian Language printing and publishing industry.
In 1991, it started to address the upcoming requirements for laser printer based DTP (desk top publishing) software as an alternative to phototypesetting machines again mainly catering to the vernacular printing and publishing industry with its flagship “AKRUTI” range of products.
Background of the promoter/director:
Mr. Sanjeev Ahluwalia is an AMIE graduate from Institute of Electronics, New Delhi. He graduated in Electronics & Communication engineering in 1983. He was part of the team of VSS Computer Engg. Co. Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai from 1983 to 1989. This team designed and developed “ASTERIX” the first mini/micro computer in the country which was used as an offline phototypesetting terminal based on Z-80 processor. The first Indian language DTP software “ASTERIX PUBLISHING SOFTWARE” was also developed by this team and exhibited in PRINTEK-88 exhibition in New Delhi. Subsequently, they developed the popular “AKRUTI” Indian language software. They were consultant to CDAC and helping them to set up the font development cell with GIST group in 1991. Aged 45 years, he is now managing director of Asterisk Electronics Pvt. Ltd.
Milestone:
1983 – Z-80 BASED OFFLINE PHOTOTYPESETTING TERMINAL. ( The first ever indigenously designed computer with Indian script entry facility.
1984 – ASTERIX PUBLISHING SYSTEM. ( The first ever publishing system based on the above terminal for Indian script publishing compatible with the following backend phototypesetting machines like AM Varitypar, Linotype, Monotype, Bobst, Compugraphics and Alphacomp.)
1985 – PC-MATE A Z-80 BASED PLUG-IN CARD FOR IBM PC’S. ( The first ever IBM PC compatible PC plusg-in card for composing Indian languages on the PC and in some senses a pre cursor to the GIST card.)
1988 – ASTERISK PUBLISHING SOFTWARE. ( The first ever hindi WYSIWYG page composing software for Ventura Publisher Gem (DOS).
1991 – AKRUTI FOR WINDOWS. ( The first ever windows 3.1 based Indian script software.)
1995 – AKRUTI – 95 PUBLISHER. ( The first ever windows 95 compatible Indian script software for DTP.
