Water Cooled Power Cable (W.C.P.C) are used to supply electrical current from transformer output i.e low voltage stationary bush tubes or bush bars to bush bars of the electrode holding arm of the furnace. All the power needed for the melting operation , passes through the secondary circuit & so it is inevitable that losses be limited in this circuit, by way of low reactance & be balanced as close as possible between the phases. This balancing of phase eliminates the resistance component which reduces the hotspot problems in the electric arc furnace. Above water cooled power cable selection chart is based on cables operating on a continuous duty basis & water flow of 8 GPM per cable.
Example to determine the total no. of circular mils per phase:
The maximum current requirement per phase refer is 60,000 Amps.
Step 1 : Locate the 60,000 ampere point on the left hand vertical scale.
Step 2 : Draw the horizontal line across the chart until it intersects the inner slanted scale.
Step 3: At the point of intersection, draw a vertical line down until it crosses the first horizontal scale at the bottom of the chart, representing the total no. of circular mils require to carry the specific load for each individual phase, this being 25,500 MCM. Terminals are machined form high conductivity electrolytic copper exacting your bush bar size & dimensions. Tin / silver electroplating is done on the terminals. Conductors are made from number of stranded ropes. They are laid on the central core in one single lay. Each single stand is made from high conductivity electrolytic copper. The central core is mad of hard rubber. Its main function is to support the conductors arranged in a specified pitch. This water hose is made up of neoprene rubber with asbestos/ fiber glass impregnated on it during vulcanization process. The outer bands are made of high tensile strength, non magnetic, stainless steel which ensures maximum sealing of the cable.
