F     A gasket is the lowest-cost component in a flanged assembly. It offers the greatest opportunity for overall cost saving if the design is right but the greatest potential for loss if the design is wrong. In summary:

F     don't re-use gaskets

F     don't use unbranded gaskets

F     don't use jointing compounds

F     the gasket should be as thin as possible

F     always lubricate bolts

F     if possible, select a torque which represents between 50% and 80% of the yield stress

F     use an acceptable assembly procedure
