LD is characterized by low density. It is usually less hard, rather supple and also possesses less strength as compared to HDPE or high density polyethylene. However it has better ductibility which makes it highly used for manufacturing of packaging material such as foils, trays and plastic bags both for food and non-food purposes. It is also used as protective coating on paper, textiles and other plastics, for instance in milk cartons. Though these are mainly opaque in nature te thin foils are completely transparent. Production of 1 kg of LD requires the equivalent of about 2 kg of oil (raw material and energy). It has excellent resistance to water, moisture and most organic solvents and chemicals (except ones with aromatic or chlorine content).
